4 Common Plumbing Mistakes Homeowners Make

Burst pipes, faucet leaks, and drain clogs that last for days are just several of the nightmares that homeowners in Denver, CO may experience. When your faucets, pipes, and toilets require repair, many take it upon themselves to do the work. Some minor issues are easily fixed using a few tools and many believe they can do it without the help of professional plumbing services in Denver.

For many of us, however, it’s no fun trying to fix your plumbing issues—especially if you have very limited plumbing experience. Here are some of the costly mistakes that many inexperienced homeowners make when trying to resolve plumbing issues:

1. Keeping your hoses connected to your outdoor water valve during winter. When it’s freezing outside, you need to disconnect your garden hose from the faucet on the side of your home. Unless you’re using the frost-free type, your faucet’s sillcock valve traps the water that freezes and could cause the pipe to crack or burst. The winter season can cause serious damage to your plumbing system; it’s important to winterize it to stay on the safe side.

2. Pouring all sorts of chemicals into the septic system. Avoid pouring Pesticides, motor oils, and garden chemicals down your drain! Doing so can kill the microorganisms that break down waste water and organic waste at the treatment plant and cause damage to the plumbing in your home.

3. Using the wrong kind or quantity of drain cleaner. It can be tempting to purchase every drain cleaner out there to solve those pesky clogged drain issues. Be warned, however, that some drain cleaners may not be suitable for your intended use. In many cases, these liquid cleaners work for minor clogs only. They react with the existing corrosion and can cause damage to your pipes.

4. Overtightening plumbing connections. Pipes come with a watertight seal, which is why making the connections tighter isn’t advised. You might end up breaking the washers that are used for sealing, or crack and damage the fittings.

You may not know it, but your lack of experience can cause or aggravate your plumbing problems at home. No DIY can replace the work of a professional and seasoned team of plumbing experts who have the right background, training, and experience.
