Nathan Padilla

From a backyard blowtorch to Master Plumber

Nathan was nine years old the first time he soldered a copper joint. A fire had broken out in the detached unit behind his mother’s house in Englewood, and the structure had to be rebuilt. His cousin, a plumber, was on the job.

Nathan wandered in from the backyard, watched the blowtorch meet the pipe, and asked if he could try. His cousin said sure. He was hooked.

He started his apprenticeship in 1998, right out of high school, through a program run by Total Plumbing. He graduated at the top of his class of 68 as an Honor Graduate.

His first three years were spent on commercial work, on large downtown Denver builds. That foundation gave him a command of commercial systems most residential specialists never develop.

Building Prime Plumbing & Heating

Nathan co-founded Prime Plumbing & Heating in 2012 with a business partner and one laborer, doing residential fix-and-flip work. In 2016, he bought out his partner and became sole owner.

  • 2016: Sole owner, revenue about $500,000
  • 2024: Revenue roughly $3 million
  • 2026: $5.2 million target
  • 15,000 to 20,000 jobs completed since founding, 3,000 to 4,000 a year now

He built it without private equity and without becoming a franchise. One owner, a family-owned company, more than a decade in business serving the Denver metro.

Ask Nathan what he’s proudest of and he doesn’t name a job or a number. He talks about his people. “Being able to employ people and be able to help them provide for their families and pay their bills, that’s the thing that matters most to me.”

What 27 Years in the Trades Looks Like

Across 27 years, Nathan has worked both commercial and residential systems, including a stretch at Arcane Mechanical, one of the largest mechanical contractors in Colorado. That range is why Prime handles plumbing, heating, cooling, and drains across the Denver metro, not just one corner of the trade.

It shows on the hard jobs. One sewer excavation ran 30 feet deep and needed shoring to hold the trench.

Groundwater from a nearby lake kept flooding the dig, so the crew brought in industrial pump trucks and worked the site for over a week straight. The job got done.

Nathan’s expertise doesn’t stay on the job site. He shares it on the blog, breaking down common plumbing and HVAC questions from 27 years in the field.

Giving Back to Denver

Nathan is a Denver native. Born here, raised here, still here, with no plans to leave.

Every year, Prime sponsors the Denver Walk to End Alzheimer’s at City Park. He also supports Stout Street Foundation, the Commerce City recovery program that helped him get sober in 2012.

He reaches out personally to people who are struggling, because he’s been there and knows there’s a way through.
